Happy Diwali from D3

Happy Diwali from D3!

D3 learnt that people celebrate Diwali by dressing up in new clothes or their best outfits, lighting up diyas inside and outside their houses, participating in prayers and having fireworks. After fireworks, people have a family feast and have sweets. D3 watched a video clip about the story of Rama and Sita and learnt the meaning behind Diwali. It shows the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance.

D3 celebrated Diwali by making and decorating paper diyas. We had lots of fun!

D3's Te Reo Maori Break Out Challenge

D3 had so much fun completing the Te Reo Maori Break Out Challenge for Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori. There were five different locks, two number locks, a word lock, colour lock and directional lock. We had to complete activities on the iPad and find clues. We solved Maori maths using Maori numbers, we had to look at Maori place names and we used Maori colours and words we know. It was such a fun challenge!

PEP Science Fair

Hi family and friends

Papatoetoe East School are having a science fair to share our learning about change and states of matter. We learnt that states of matter can change when we heat, mix and cool. We hope you can come and see the great science experiments that we have done!

D3's Aborginal Leaf Art

D3 have been exploring aboriginal art. We created leaf art using warm and cool colours and dot patterns.

D3's Scientists

This term D3 have been writing explanations about how to be a good scientist.

A good scientist explores new things. Lots of scientists study hard to do new experiments. Scientists have discovered the whole world, if there weren’t any scientists we would not know any history of the world. Sometimes experiments can go wrong but they will keep on trying. Would you like to be a scientist? Well I would absolutely love to be a scientist because I would have my own lab and my own lab coat. By Rishan.

Many people think only some people are gifted and can be scientists but they are 100% wrong. Any body can be whatever they want to be. But we are all born to be scientists in different ways. All the things you need to be a scientist or do is be curious and question every idea you’ve got. So now does that ensure you 100% that it doesn’t matter what age you are or that you dont have to be a boy or girl? Are you still wondering how to be a good scientist? Well, here are 4 more things… Firstly a good scientist always stops half way and says how am I going? Secondly to be a great scientist you always should have your head held high and never give up. Thirdly a scientist observes and learns from people like other scientists. Lastly a scientist is always curious about things around them and questions everything they know. So now are you encouraged? You can be a scientist and now it’s your turn to show the world how you can make difference. By Ella

First, a good scientist always tries something new but also they never give up. Scientists also explore, investigate and even wonder. When people make projects and it doesn’t work they keep trying and they never give up. All people are born scientists. People can be scientists because they can invent things like marble maker. Next, they have to have strong evidence. For example if people don’t believe them then they can show them. After, scientists all hypothesise about what will happen or what the experiment will do. E.g. hypothesising means you think about what’s going to happen. Finally, they also have an open mind and listen to suggestions. For example if you have a plan and some one gives you a suggestion, it’s an idea. By Uzair.

A good scientist keeps on trying and never gives up. Also, did you know we were all born as fantastic scientists? We’re all curious and ask questions. When we were babies we touched everything and looked around everywhere. First, a good scientist follows a scientific method. They hypothesise about what might happen, hypothesis means to make an educated guess but not to make a silly guess like this, baking soda and white vinegar will turn into a elephant. Secondly, a good scientist plans and follows the procedure carefully, they also measure and do hard steps carefully and accurately. The procedure is to test if their hypothesis is correct. Scientists have made our lives better by inventing things. Also, scientists can be girls or boys. Finally, scientists record what they observe and notice during the scientist experiment, so scientists can use it as evidence. After they check the results of the experiment and also analyse what happened. By Zaafiya

D3's Elephant Toothpaste Experiment

This experiment created lots of foam, each bubble was filled with oxygen. We learnt that the yeast acted as a helper to remove the oxygen from the hydrogen peroxide. Since it did this very fast, lots of bubbles were created.

Oobleck Experiment

Guess the solid, liquid or gas

Exploding a zip lock bag

Experimenting with water

D3 has been learning about how states of matter can change. We experimented with water and observed how water can change from a liquid into a solid when we freeze it. Ice can change from a solid to a liquid when we heat it. Water can change from a water to a gas when we boil it because it evaporates and turns into steam.

Solid, Liquid and Gas

D3 have been learning about the three states of matter, solids, liquids and gases. We acted like particles in each state of matter, we pretended to be a solid, liquid and a gas.

D3 was pretending to be a solid. So we had to pack together tightly. We wanted to show that a solid has shape and volume.

D3 was acting like a liquid and showed we were close together but could still move passed each other. We were pretending to be liquid particles in a big drink bottle.

D3 was pretending to be a gas and spread out and move in all directions. We looked like air.

What D3 knows about solids, liquids and gases

This term our inquiry focus is Change. We learnt that almost everything in the world is a state of matter, either solid, liquid or gas. D3 created a padlet to share what we already know about solids, liquids and gases.

What to do if you find a lost, injured or abandoned animal by Javier and Tait

Five Freedoms for Dogs By Javier, Tait and Dexton

Talofa lava this term we have been making a Google Slide presentation to show the five freedoms for dogs and puppies. They need a healthy balanced diet and to be fed the right amount, also fresh, clean water. The five freedoms are freedom from hunger and thirst, freedom from discomfort, freedom to express normal behaviour, freedom from fear and distress and freedom from pain, injury and disease. Lastly, it shows dog owners how to care for their dogs appropriately.

How does the SPCA help animals? By Leelee and Flora

Hi Everyone, we have made a Google Slide presentation for you because we have been learning about how to make a difference for animals. We have also been learning about animal welfare. This Google Presentation will show you how the SPCA helps animals. They prevent cruelty to animals, they rescue animals, provide medical care and shelter, help animals find a new home, they seek justice for abused animals and also have education programmes. We have also shown people what to do if they find a lost or injured animal. I hope you listen to what we're trying to say and please help animals because they were made to love and care for so that's what we you should do. Thank you!

Five Freedoms for Rabbits By Zaafiya and Desha

Our Google Slide presentation is about the five freedoms for rabbits and it educates people about how to care for them. We also have shown pictures so people understand what the five freedoms are. We hope this helps you learn about how to look after a pet rabbit. Thank you for watching.

Endangered Animals By Solomon, Daiyaan and Joel

Our Google Slide presentation educates people about why we should not litter or cut down trees. Red pandas and tigers live in forests and when humans cut down trees they are destroying their habitat. People should be recycling plastic and not littering because it harms sea turtles. Humans are are killing tigers illegally which is bad and against the law.

Endangered Animals By Holli and Armani

We made this Google Slide to show people why kiwis and red pandas are endangered. One of the main reasons is because people are cutting down their habitats. We also wanted to tell people what they can do to help them.

Critically Endangered Sea Turtles by Ariyan and Harjovean

Our Pic Collage is about critically endangered sea turtles. Turtles are eating plastic and dying because people are littering plastic. Turtles think it is food and eat it, they can choke or it can make them feel full and they can starve to death. They can also get tangled in plastic and drown. We wanted to show people why it is important to recycle plastic and not litter.

Five Freedoms for Dogs By Max and Jayveer B

Our Pic Collage is about the five freedoms for dogs so you know if you are taking care of your dog properly. These are the five freedoms for dogs, freedom from hunger and thirst, freedom to express normal behaviour, freedom from pain, injury and disease, freedom from fear and distress and freedom from discomfort. You will see what they need and don't in our pic collage.

Five Freedoms for Cats By Junior, Rishan and Uzair

Our Google Slide is about the five freedoms for cats. Cats need to be loved and be healthy and happy. They need to be fed the right amount of food and have access to clean, fresh water. Also, they need lots of exercise and play time. Cats need to be loved and cared for.

Don't Litter Please, Our Sea Creatures are Dying! By Raina and Kley

We made this Google Slide Presentation to educate people and encourage them to stop littering and using plastic bags, instead they should fabric reusable bags. Many sea creatures are suffering because most people throw plastic away and they end up in our oceans. So let's start to work as a team and save our animals!

D3's Zoo Trip

D3 had a great time at the zoo and we learnt so much about how to make a difference for animals. Fraser took us into the NZCCM to learn about the different roles people at the zoo have caring for animals. People can watch animals being looked after by vets and they can watch animals having surgery too! After, Miss Mac took us to the tiger enclosure and told us lots of information about Tigers. We learnt that there are only 400 Sumatran Tigers left in the wild. Next, Sarah took us into the classroom and told us about behaviour enrichment. Auckland Zoo puts different objects around the enclosures to encourage natural behaviour and to get the animals to interact with their food and environment. Then, we explored the zoo and looked at the different animals.

SPCA Five Freedoms

D3 has been learning about animal welfare. We learnt about the SPCA Five Freedoms that all animals deserve.
They are:
Freedom from hunger and thirst
Freedom from discomfort
Freedom to express normal behavior
Freedom from fear and distress
Freedom from injury, pain and disease

Why are animals endangered?

This term our school inquiry focus is "Make a Difference". We have been learning about animal welfare and what we can do to make a difference to animals. D3 have been researching endangered animals. Endangered means when an animal is at risk of becoming extinct. We wanted to find out why animals are endangered.
