Keeping our wind trap clean

D3's inquiry question is...
How can we improve and sustain a healthy school environment?

We decided to interview two important people in our school, Mr Eley and Miss Capstick about current issues in our school. We also asked them what they do to keep our school healthy. They do many helpful things around our school!
We found out that a current issue in our school is RUBBISH! We wanted to take action...

A current issue in our school is rubbish because it is flowing from the streets and from around the school to D block and is getting trapped outside our classroom because we have a wind trap.

Our solution is that we are having a class sweeping roster for in the morning and afternoon. There are two sweepers and one person shovels up the rubbish.

D3's World Environment Day

D3 celebrated World Environment Day by coming up with individual pledges to look after our environment. A pledge is a promise.

D3 came up with some of these pledges...

I pledge to:

  • use a bucket to collect rain water to water the gardens
  • give my old toys away to other people, instead of throwing them away
  • turn off the light when I leave the room to save power
  • have shorter showers to save water and money
  • keep rubbish in my pocket until I find a bin
  • put rubbish in the right bin
  • reuse materials
  • turn of the tap while I'm brushing my teeth
  • make sure I turn the tap off properly
D3 then signed a class pledge.

Our class pledges to do our part to protect the environment and work toward a healthier Earth for future generations.

Oh no! It cracked...

Oh no, it cracked! Why do you think this happened?

What could we do to change the cement mixture so that it doesn't crack next time?

The Big Reveal!

The cement leaves had dried... It was time for the big reveal!

What do you think?

Do you see why we had to use leaves with big veins?

They will look fantastic when we add paint!

Making our leaf sculptures

D3 had to choose leaves with big veins for our sculptures. I wonder why?

First we placed the leaves in the sand with the veins facing up. We wore gloves to protect our hands, then we scooped up the cement and put it on top of the leaves. D3 thought the piles of cement looked like cow pats!

Then, we left them to dry...

D3's Cement Leaf Sculptures

D3 went for a walk through our living classroom to come up with ideas for sculptures that we could make. We went on the computer and looked at different sculptures made from different materials. We really liked the sculptures made from cement.

Ms Bottica and Primrose brought a few cement sculptures to school to show us. They had made them! We were fascinated by the leaf sculpture. We decided we wanted to have a go at making them too!

Ms Bottica came to school to help us create our sculptures.

First, we had to find leaves around the school. Ramsey found a great silverbeet leaf in the junior school's vegetable garden.

Once we had collected all of the leaves we went back to class to get started.

Ms Bottica, Jonathon and Soheel put sand in big green crates for the leaves to dry on.

Jonathan lifted the big bag of cement powder outside. Ms Bottica poured cement powder and water in a bucket and mixed it together.

D3 thought the mixture looked like a sloppy cake mix.

We had to wear yellow gloves to protect our skin from the cement. The cement was ready and so were we! Take a look at our next post to see how they turned out.

Hot Air Balloon Art

At the beginning of the year D3 read one of Mrs Salim's favourite books, "Oh, the Places You'll Go". We decided to make hot air balloons for a display in our room. We had to imagine that we were in a hot air balloon so that Mrs Salim could take a photo of us to glue onto our art. Check out our fabulous vivid and dye art!
